Naruto Strait Whirlpools

Aside from having the fastest tidal current in Japan, the Naruto Whirlpools in the Naruto Strait, Tokushima are also recognised as the largest tidal whirlpools in the world!

The Naruto Whirlpools occur when quick currents collide with gentler ones between the Seto Inland Sea and the Kii Canal, creating dramatic swirls reaching up to 30 meters in diameter and as fast as 20 kilometers per hour.

Visitors have the choice of experiencing the whirlpools from several vantage points, such as the Uzu no Michi tidal viewing facility on the Onaruto Bridge. Decked with a promenade and whirlpool viewing room made of glass windows, you get to marvel at the whirlpools from above.

If you’re feeling more adventurous, book the Kanrinmaru sightseeing ship to feel the whirlpool’s effects up close and personal. Complete with a mini museum onboard, passengers get taken right to the edge of the whirlpools for the experience of a lifetime.

To reach here by express bus, depart from the Sannomiya express bus terminal to Fukura port. Alternatively, drive for 30 minutes from Tokushima Awaodori Airport.
