Mt. Aso Nakadake Crater

Mt. Aso in central Kyushu, Kumamoto Prefecture holds the distinction as Japan’s most active volcano in addition to being one of the world’s largest calderas!

While the Mt. Aso caldera houses five mountains in total, the Mt. Nakadake Crater is the centre of all attention. At its heart lies the mysterious emerald green lake which emits fumes and white smoke, creating an almost otherworldly scene that attracts visitors from all around the globe.

Due to the volatile nature of the volcano and weather conditions, the crater is often closed off in the interest of public safety. It is best to check the volcano’s current state before traveling there and take necessary precautions for visitors with respiratory concerns.

All geared up to see the magnificent Mt. Nakadake Crater in action? Take a 30-40 minute bus ride from JR Aso Station or rent a car for a quicker journey.
