Known as one of the three most beautiful gardens in Japan, Kenrokuen Garden boasts 11.4 hectares of land and is a bonafide must-visit when in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture.
Kenrokuen’s name means “garden that combines six characteristics” as it was designed with spaciousness, tranquility, artifice, antiquity, water sources and magnificent views in mind. These six qualities are believed to be the hallmarks of the “perfect” garden, which makes Kunrokuen a delight to visit across the seasons.
In the winter time, the garden transforms into a magical wonderland thanks to the traditional practices of yukizuri. Serving to protect the pine branches from heavy snow, rope suspenders and bamboo poles are attached in an artistic conical arrangement above the trees. This stunning winter landscape gives a touch of geometric wonder and becomes especially mesmerising at night when illuminated.
As the garden sits in the heart of Kanazawa, it is only a short commute from the main city. Take the Kenrokuen shuttle bus Kanazawa Station at bus stop 7, which should take less than 15 minutes to reach the garden.
